BAckyard Painting
In regards to the two types of canvas that can be used, one of them is known as linen, which is strong and durable. It is made from the fibers of the flax plant and top quality flax is harvested mainly in Western Europe. If you want your painting to last then a linen canvas is a sound investment. The threads that make up linen, known as the warp and weft threads, weigh the same, which means they are less prone to expansion or contraction due to moisture.
Another fun fact about linen is that it retains its natural oils, which helps to preserve the fiber’s flexibility and stops the canvas from going brittle. It is also regarded as having a more ‘natural’ weaved finish than cotton – a variety of textures and weights are available in both rough and smooth finishes. Because of its strength linen holds up to a heavy painting hand and does not become slack as easily as cotton canvas. I prefer this type of canvas when creating my artwork. |
Concrete Art
"A common medium that I use is known as acrylics, which are water-based. This means that unlike oil paints, they can be thinned with water and cleaned with water. They are also non-toxic and non-potent in smell. Acrylic paints can mimic the quality of oil paints, but without the toxicity and clean-up issues that go along with oils. When thinned with lots of water, acrylics can also mimic the qualities of watercolor.
I think there are a lot of advantages to using acrylics, one being that acrylic paint dries quickly. For one thing, painting with acrylics is great if you like to work quickly. It is also very easy to "go over" if you've made a mistake." - Harrison |
Crabtree and Sky
A type of canvas that can be used for oil painting is, cotton, which is a soft, fluffy fiber that grows in a ball or protective capsule around the seeds of cotton plants. The plant is native to the Americas, Africa and India and is most often spun into yarn or thread to create a soft, breathable textile.
The advantage of cotton is that it is affordable and it stretches very easily. A properly prepared cotton canvas will last a long time. However, it is sometimes considered to be too flexible for large paintings, and as you can see with Crabtree and Sky, I chose to work with linen as opposed to cotton due to the large structure. |

Mustard "Acrylic paint lends itself well to mixed media applications, which further broadens the possibilities of painting with acrylics. The most popular surfaces for painting with acrylics are canvas, wood or paper. As you can see I am an avid user of canvas because I feel it comes off better to the viewer.
The final finish of the painting can be altered with gloss, matte, or satin varnish. When properly varnished, acrylic paintings do not need to be framed behind glass. They can be hung directly on the wall. With Mustard, you can see the acrylic paint giving off this shine, which is from the gloss." -Harrison |

"You will notice in my pieces that I use a variety of different canvas to display my artwork on. There are about four different types of canvas that are used by artists; canvas panel, un-stretched canvas, canvas pads or sheets, and the most popular - stretched canvas.
Canvas panel refers to canvas that is mounted onto a sturdy hardboard or mounting board, whereas, un-stretched canvas is simply canvas that is not attached to wooden stretchers. This second type of canvas is easy to use in that as an artist I can stretch it to the size I desire." -Harrison |

"To continue the types of canvas’s used, canvas pads contain sheets of un-stretched canvas and are even more affordable than canvas panels. They are therefore recommended for students, children and beginning artists. Usually I don’t use this type, but in regards to stretched canvas’s, they are by far the most popular and conventional form of painting on canvas. Buying canvas that is pre-stretched is much easier than stretching your own."
