"In my drawings, I depict scenarios which appear as quintessential or intense moments of human experience. Rites of passage or transition such as adolescence, marriage and death; and political and personal crisis are subject matter which serves as points of departure. As a body of work, these moments of commonly shared experiences are explored and reveal my personal vision of the human condition.
The figure is of central importance in my drawings as an emphatic reference point, as a stepping stone into the image. Fragmentation of the figure in space determines the circumstances and emotional state. The handling of the negative space emphasizes the conditions of the experience. The images are in a constant state of flux as the viewer moves visually throughout the piece. Nonspecific description of the figures identity removes one from the personal to the universal realm, elevating to the symbolic level."
